Southern Inspired - Updated Front Entry Lighting

Updated: Aug 16, 2018

Hey there fellow DIYers! I am so excited about sharing this update with you. I had toyed with the idea of updating my outdoor lighting…one day. A couple months ago when I was in Raleigh, NC, visiting my daughter, the “ got to do it!” seed was planted. (This was on my someday list of “to do” items. Especially since I have 3 outdoor lights on my house, and can you believe that all 3 are DIFFERENT?!). Sooo, my daughter, Kristin and I, accompanied with my little dog Mojo, spent A LOT of time outside walking and enjoying the mild NC temps/weather and scenery. Walking the Greenway...Walking the neighborhoods. One day we even decided to walk from the North Hills area where she lives down to a local Beer Garden/Restaurant, and after a beverage and some appetizers, another walk back through yet another neighborhood. We actually tracked over 22000 steps on my Fitbit!! I love the southern homes! Porches with fans, beautiful outdoor spaces, and some of the most amazing outdoor lighting I have ever seen! Have you ever seen those oversized gas lanterns? They add such a beautiful ambient light and the curb appeal is just stunning! Soooo….needless to say, I thought about my mismatched lights at home, and the idea moved to my “gotta do it” list. I couldn’t wait to get home and update my outdoor lighting!

Here are a couple pics of the front entry with the old, tired lighting. As you can see, not too appealing and definitely in need of a bit of a refresh!

I searched the internet for the vibe that I was looking for. I knew I wanted something with a farmhouse feel, as I am so into that style as of late. I wanted something with clear glass, so that I could use an Edison bulb and get close to the Southern gas lantern feel. I found the lighting that I was looking for on I quickly ordered the lights. The lights I ended up purchasing were the Torrence 1-Light Outdoor Wall Lantern by Laurel Foundry Modern Farmhouse, and lo and behold, at $54.99 for a set of 2, I thought a great buy as well!! Wayfair also had 2 day free shipping and in 2 days I had the lights in my hands ready to install. Could hardly contain my excitement! I LOVED them and couldn’t wait to see them on my house!!

That afternoon, I enlisted the competent help of my boyfriend to go to work installing the front door light. The old light had served me well, but it was time to make its way to lighting heaven. I was very hesitant to tackle the job myself as electricity SCARES me….particularly as someone who had no idea where to begin, thus my decision to enlist Don’s help. So after a bit of finagling, a run to the local hardware store for some drill bits (cause mine were basically useless…dull, DULL, DULL!!), and also a couple mistakes/redo’s, we finally got the light installed. I added a clear bulb and flipped the switch. I am in AWE of how great the new lantern looks!! It adds such a warm, soft glow with a much more modern, updated feel. The black finish is a perfect complement to the deep gray color of my front door. Love, LOVE, L-O-V-E the curb appeal with the new lighting…especially at night!
